As usual Kate and I went into the city on Friday night.
After dropping by the new wall in Caledonian Lane ( In support of Don’t Ban the Can ) we decided to go and have a beer at No Vacancy where the Lenko Doodle Show was having its opening night.
On first impressions it looked like any other exhibition opening - free beer, some familiar faces and the now obligatory sceensters… But the “art”, that’s a different story…
There was a huge gallery, a bunch of sponsors and allot of trendy morons chin scratching. For what? A handful of black and white photocopies of really bad doodles, the kind of doodles you can mindlessly churn out without thinking.
If there was a punch line to this joke we didn’t get it.
The really amazing thing was that they were for sale and quite a few had sold! WTF?
I’m in despair for Western civilisation, it is heading nowhere - Counter culture is dying and has been replaced with a massive circle of wankers.
Not all was lost though, we ran into Itch and Mothra and headed off to Cinch ( a live DJ audio visual mix up featuring animation and video from around the world). Much enjoyment and beer was had by all.
The best thing about Melbourne? There’s always a plan B.
Kate’s 2 cents > I really think that a better way to run a “Doodle Show” would be to have a few photocopiers in the gallery - all stocked up with paper - so the show could be interactive and people can plaster the walls with all sorts of sketchy madness. This show seemed more like an excercise in PR than a gathering of creative ideas.
